SEAFOOD LOVE: NYC EDITION

Living on the East Coast is different in obvious ways from other regions throughout the US.  We have a higher coast of living, public transportation is a norm, you can find Timbs year round ANYWHERE, and easy access to a great selection of seafood.  I know Beyoncé said she would take her man to Red Lobster, but that is the last place on our minds out here on the East Coast.  There are so many great places to grab some good crustaceans, but here is a short list I complied.

The Boil – This Cajun/Creole seafood spot located on the Lower East Side opened in 2013, and since then have expanded to a second location in Greenwich Village.  There are a lot of celebrity sightings at both locations, but don’t let that distract from the most important reason to drop by which is the food.  The boil bag is their most popular item on their menu.

Lure Fish Bar –  Mentioned in a previous post Top 5 Eats In SoHo it is considered an upscale seafood restaurant with only the freshest selection.  The decor is unforgettable and the entire restaurant appears to look like the inside of yacht.  Some of my favorites include their Lobster Mac and Cheese, King Crab California Roll, Slow Baked Halibut, and Grilled Octopus.

It's back by demand, our Sea Urchin Bucatini with Crab and Red Chile #seafood #pasta

It is my favorite time of the year again, and the foodie gawds are looking out for our wallets!  It’s NYC Restaurant Week from July 24th – August 18th.  During this special time, you are able to get a three-course prix fixe dinner for $42 or a three-course lunch for $29.  Of course this does not include beverages, gratuity, and tax SO BE SURE TO TAKE CARE OF YOUR SERVER – THANK YOU.  I highly encourage you to make a reservation due to the popularity of this event via their program sponsor OpenTable, or you could go old school and actually call the restaurant. Feel free to check out the NYC Restaurant week official website for more deets and a complete list of restaurants.

When it comes to food we first eat with our eyes.  By that I mean we are naturally stimulated by our sight.  The more appealing food is the more likely you are to indulge.  Here are some restaurants that do an superb job of stimulating us visually with a great IG page.  In the wise words of Fab “…you look so good you should win an InstaGrammy”.  Check out the list below and be sure to follow a couple, because they won’t disappoint you.  These restaurants should win an InstaGrammy!

Williamsburg: Grand Street Restaurant Week

We all need an excuse to go Williamsburg since it is not always the easiest or most convenient to get to.  Well, here it is folks, Grand Street Restaurant Week!!!  It is currently going on NOW and ends February 12th.  The prices are amazing with 3-course dinners ranging from $12 – $30 and lunches only $9 – $15.  I would catch the L Train for these type of deals.  Not all locations are offering lunch specials, so head over to their website and remember reading is fundamental.  If you have been to any of the restaurants listed below let us know and shout out your favorite dishes in our comment section!

Dough Doughnuts

Dare I say the best doughnuts in NYC? I will and I dare you to debate me on this topic.  What is not to love about these large, fluffy, visually appealing, and deliciously tasting doughnuts?  They come in traditional flavors such as plain glazed or cinnamon sugar, but they also have some unique favors such as Hibiscus and Horchata.  One of the great seasonal doughnuts they have available for the holiday season is their Gingerbread doughbut.  They are well known for their yeast doughnuts but they also specialize in cake doughnuts and Doughkas (twisted yeast loaves). BROOKLYN BRUNCHIN: SOCO

I always say the perfect recipe for a memorable brunch includes great food, unlimited mimosas, and a great ambiance.  SoCo in Brooklyn gives this of these thing served with “southern fusion” cuisine which includes BBQ, cajun/creole, and soul food.  Their brunch includes a $15 unlimited mimosa with the purchase of entree on Saturday for one hour.  I know what you are thinking “What about 90 mins?” or “Why only Saturday?”  Trust me when I say the food will make up for it.

Regardless of what day you go for brunch I recommend making reservations if you can because this is a popular spot in Brooklyn.  Some favorites at this restuarant include:

  • Chicken and Red Velvet Waffles
  • Mac N’ Cheese
  • Strawberry Shortcake French Toast
  • Lobster, Shrimp, and Grits
  • Cornbread
  • Gumbo

During the warmer months they have a back patio which only enhances your brunchin experience.  Although I normally go to SoCo for brunch their dinner menu features things such as Pecan Crusted Pork Chops, Jambalaya, and Molasses Braised Short Ribs.

RESTAURANT SPOTLIGHT: SUEDE

Consistency is something that I consider to be very important for any restaurant that I am dining in.  I have been to Suede a handful of times and each time they always meet and exceed my expectations.  Suede offers modern Caribbean food in a classy environment that is perfect for any occasion.

I have seen couples dining here, large parties celebrating birthdays, families, and tables of beautiful women having a Ladies’ Night.  Their food will amaze you, the service will impress you, and the overall experience will have you coming back over and over.  Suede is located in the East Flatbush neighborhood of Brooklyn and first opened November 28th, 2014.  I remember going to their soft opening for family and friends and being very impressed by the food, space, and service.
