LA Fashion Week: Who you need to know!

I’ve finally found a quick moment to breath! After working 16 hour days last week during LA Fashion Week, I’ve found a moment of clarity.

Last week, was utterly insane! I’ve met so many people, made so many connections and discovered so many talented designers. Which leads me here, my top 4 designer picks from LA Fashion Week

4. Radka Salcmannova

I had the pleasure of getting to know Radka in a interview I did with her Bedford her runway debut. Hailing all the way from the Czech Republic, Radka started out as a sculptor and somehow found her way to fashion design by working as an art director. You ever meet someone with a great energy and that translated into everything they touched, that’s Radka. Her pieces are avant-garde and remind me of McQueen.

3. Mary Me Jimmy Paul

Fun, quirky and yet still stylish, MaryMe JimmyPaul has already been seen on Rihanna, Gaga and Ariana Grande. This brand is all about having fun. While most of the made of plastic, I found myself obsessed over the fringe-tweed looks! Definitely Jean Paul Gaultier meets Moschino.

2. Bishme Cromartie

Crazy how the universe introduces you to people. I met Bishme at my niece’s birthday party but had no clue he was a designer until I saw a mutual friend at his pop up in Baltimore. We’ve seen Bishme’s custom designs on everyone from Karrueche, Andra Day to Mel B. and Jazmine Sullivan. What I dig most about Bishme is he reminds me of an Parisian Atelier, everything is pretty much made to order and you can feel the love he puts into every piece. That’s rare nowadays.

1. Noe Bernacelli

Making his US debut, Noe Bernacelli hails all the wait from Peru. Noe’s designs romantic gowns consists of intricate beading and lace on a chiffon palette. The line also featured tailored men’s suits to accompany the gowns. Reminded me of old Hollywood glam, I’d definitely could see Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt killing the red carpet, only if they were still together.

NATIONAL PASTA DAY: 5 Places To Grab Pasta

October is normally the strong nudge from Mother Earth that reminds us it is fall, and Pumpkin Spice Lattes are a weekly requirement.  Call me basic if you will BUT I LOVE THEM!  We tend to forget about other marvelous things that bring us joy like PASTA!  Not only is it National Pasta Month, but it is also National Pasta Day TODAY!  Pasta is a staple for most Italian dishes, and the devil to those on those No Carb diets.  The first time pasta was mentioned in a book was during the 1100’s, and it is still finding its way to every restaurant’s menu today.  In honor of this glorious day I have provided with 5 places to grab a nice plate of pasta from.

CelesteThis quaint establishment is located on the Upper West Side and is cash only.  They are known for serving up authentic Italian food, unforgettable cheese plates, affordable prices, and providing superb customer service.  They do not take reservations but it is worth the wait.

HIDDEN GEM: TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie

I have been holding back on sharing this hidden gem for a while.  TsuruTonTan Udon Noodle Brasserie has been in business over a year, and these Udon specialists are showing no signs of slowing down.  The Brasserie located near Union Square is the first location in the United States, but they currently have 13 locations in Japan.  Per a restaurant rep they have intentions of expanding to two more locations in NYC in the near future.

SEAFOOD LOVE: NYC EDITION

Living on the East Coast is different in obvious ways from other regions throughout the US.  We have a higher coast of living, public transportation is a norm, you can find Timbs year round ANYWHERE, and easy access to a great selection of seafood.  I know Beyoncé said she would take her man to Red Lobster, but that is the last place on our minds out here on the East Coast.  There are so many great places to grab some good crustaceans, but here is a short list I complied.

The Boil – This Cajun/Creole seafood spot located on the Lower East Side opened in 2013, and since then have expanded to a second location in Greenwich Village.  There are a lot of celebrity sightings at both locations, but don’t let that distract from the most important reason to drop by which is the food.  The boil bag is their most popular item on their menu.

Lure Fish Bar –  Mentioned in a previous post Top 5 Eats In SoHo it is considered an upscale seafood restaurant with only the freshest selection.  The decor is unforgettable and the entire restaurant appears to look like the inside of yacht.  Some of my favorites include their Lobster Mac and Cheese, King Crab California Roll, Slow Baked Halibut, and Grilled Octopus.

It's back by demand, our Sea Urchin Bucatini with Crab and Red Chile #seafood #pasta

GET SHORTY ORDERED ON EPIX!

Reboots continue to prove there’s nothing new under the sun, but “Get Shorty,” a dark and satisfying 10-episode series premiered Sunday on Epix, makes a persuasive case for recycling. Based primarily in spirit on the 1990 Elmore Leonard novel, the series is a fine upgrade from the almost forgettable 1995 film version that starred John Travolta in his “Pulp Fiction” afterglow. This “Get Shorty” succeeds mainly by making a viewer forget that anything else came before, and shouldn’t that be the goal of all remakes?

Creator/showrunner Davey Holmes (whose writing credits include “Shameless” and “In Treatment”) and co-executive producers Allen Coulter (“The Sopranos”) and Adam Arkin have basically ripped “Get Shorty” down to the studs, remodeling it with a longer arc and richer context.

It’s still about a hit man who tries to make it in the movie business, but this time there’s a “Breaking Bad” sense of desert seediness matched with naive Hollywood scheming that feels somehow fuller and more authentic than past iterations. If nothing else, “Get Shorty” proves just how good the people who make TV are at making TV!
