Blue Apron Experience

The meal kit industry makes up $2 billion out of the $800 billion dollar grocery industry.  This over saturated market is expected to grow five times that by 2020.  Why?  Becasuse as consumers we are naturally drawn to anything that is convenient, and it is even better if it help you save money versus eating out.  Living in New York City has made me even more appreciative of every hour in my day.  As a New Yorker we do things like schedule our errands around the train line we take home, utilize wash n ‘ fold services for laundry, or even getting that bottle of wine delivered home after a long day in the office.  Honestly, this list could go on and on about New Yorkers and our fine time management skills.  Without time management skills this city will eat you alive.  That sounds dramatic but so is trying to hit up three stores and getting home in under an hour but these are daily real life situations. So the day I got a Blue Apron $30 off coupon in my mailbox I decided to honker down and give the meal kit idea a try.

Blue Apron is one of the most well known names in the meal kit industry and has been in business since 2012.  They have expanded into the world of wine to accompany their pre-planned meals, sell cookbooks, and cooking utensils.  I consider myself an informed consumer and I typically conduct further research before making a purchase but Blue Apron is a trusted name.  I have had their app downloaded on my phone for months prior to receiving the coupon (#RetentionMarketingWorks) and occasionally glanced at their visually appealing menus.  Blue Apron has a choice of 2 person or Family plan, and you able to select 2 or 3 meals per week.  I selected 2 person plan with the 3 meal option which cost $59.94.  With the $30 coupon it brought the total to $29.94, and made each serving about $5.  I selected Fontina Cheeseburgers, Seared Chicken & Creamy Eggplant, and Salmon & Udon Noodle Stir-fry.  After ordering through the app it took about a week for the box to be delivered.  I had opted to have the box delivered to my office because they ship via UPS and you do not have a window of time when it will be delivered.

Upon opening the box I noticed how jumbled together the ingredients were.  I was forewarned by one of my colleagues who has ordered Hello Fresh and Blue Apron.  After about 10 minutes of going through the box I was able to figure out what items went with what dinner based upon the large recipe cards they provide you with.  All of the meals I had selected for the week took about 30 minutes to make and tasted great.  I never got around to making the third meal which was the Seared Chicken due to my household’s busy schedule.  The next time that I order from Blue Apron I will just pick the 2 meal option to prevent from wasting a meal.  Overall, it was a great experience and it is something I could see myself doing maybe once a month.  I wish there was some type of shameless plug I could do at this time with a referral code – but there are none.  Instead what Blue Apron allows you to do is reward a friend or family member with a free box after you have placed multiple orders.

Below I featured my outcome of the two dinners I made and following are the images from Blue Apron.  I feel as if my burger looks a tad bit sad but I think my Udon dish looks pretty spot on.

Have tried Blue Apron?  What did you think?  Do you have another favorite meal kit company you prefer?  Share with me in the comment section!

Gabriel Held, The Instagram Account You Need to be Following

I stumbled across this account maybe a month ago on the popular, my bad, explore page on ig and I have been OBSESSED ever since.

Vogue has coined Gabriel Held as, “Instagram’s foremost fashion historian” and I couldn’t agree more! When you divulge into Held’s insta account you learn that he is a stylist and vintage dealer who’s pieces have made there way to some pretty bad ass name, i.e. Rihanna in the “Wild Thought’s” Video!!!!

Speaking of Rihanna, you have to check out Gabriel’s baritone rendition of “Wild Thoughts”! This baritone diva also covers Kandi’s “Don’t Think I’m Not”, (which is how I hit follow) not to mention a weekly video of him performing Lil Kim. (Sidebar: I was Lil Kim for Halloween in the 4th grade, my mom didn’t know who she was! Oh, and my sister and I got grounded for going to see her at the “No Way Out Tour” in ’97)
As a lover of 80’s, 90’s and hip hop style Gabriel Held’s page evokes emotion for me and takes me to a certain place in my life where I was super carefree watching MTV, BET (when they both played music videos and now I’m telling my age) and dreaming of being in Vogue!

So fashion lovers get in, follow @gabriel_held_vintage and enjoy the ride! I guarantee you will get your life on a daily!!! We all need it in these tumultuous times!

Rumor Mill: The Twins names are….

As if today couldn’t get any greater with Jay Z dropping his Tidal 4:44 album, Jay and Bey have had the names of their twins leaked again and not it’s not Shawn and Bea (which would’ve been super basic).

With a daughter, Blue Ivy, who’s name is already iconic. The Carters needed something to withstand the test of time. Why would Beyoncé give the girl a 90 year old woman’s name who drinks prune juice…not iconic.
Drumroll please: Sir Carter and Rumi

If these are in fact my niece and nephew’s names, these are definitely dope and could never BEY forgotten.

Ye’ Turns 40

Today we celebrate Kanye West 40th birthday and whats a better way to honor the former Louis Vuitton Don than with some of his greatest moments in Fashion. Just like we all have a favorite Ye’ album, we all have a favorite Ye’ fashion era. I honestly prefer anything pre 2012 (shade), though the fashion on Yeezus was impressive. I’m not here for the homeless/bodysuit monochromatic look where I have to pay 600 bucks for a sweatshirt that I can get at Walmart.
So here’s to you Kanye, we hope you give us 40 more years of style.

Harlem Bars: Showing Above 125th Some Love

Harlem is unlike any other neighborhood in New York City, and it has been my home for almost 4 years.  Since living in this neighborhood I find it very important to support the local businesses in my hood from my cleaners, to my shoe repair, local clothing stores, restaurants, and bars.  I feel as if when it comes to the restaurant/bar scene in Harlem things above 125th street are sometimes an afterthought for most people.  I wanted to share with you some of my favorite places to grab a good drink above 125th.

The Honeywell – This bar is located on the lower level of a building in which you are not able to see directly into from walking past.  This being said, it creates this level of suspense before you walk into this bar that transports you back to the 70’s with their dimmed yellow lights and retro wallpaper.  This bar does not  JUST have tentative bartenders that serve up great drinks, but puts on a damn great show while making them.  They accept reservations via their website, and is great for large groups and offer great bar bites.  Be prepared to fall in love and cheat on current fav bartenders.

Trader Joe’s Favs

When I first moved to NYC I saw people hauling multiple Trader Joe’s bags on the the subway.  I kept telling myself Trader Joe’s cannot be that great, and refused to go shopping there because I felt if I conformed I would be coming part of the TJ cult.  After one visit I was convinced that I found love in place called Trader Joe’s.  Grocery shopping in NYC is similar to trying to complete some strenuous obstacle course that requires strategic planning. Imagine trying to determine how many items you buy, juggle in two arms, and fit onto a possibly packed subway. (more…)

Jeff Koons x Louis Vuitton

Images of the Jeff Koons x Louis Vuitton were released today and two nights ago celebs partied it up at The Louvre in Paris to celebrate the collection. According to Vogue, everyone toasted the night away and danced to Rae Sremmurd, Lil’ Yachty (eye roll) and whats a party without Drake (double eye roll*). I can only imagine Michelle Williams (Dawson’s Creek not Destiny’s Child) yelling “I got fake people showing fake love to me..”

This is the first series to drop in their collaboration and this go round is famous paintings and the painters name on the exterior. Pieces start at $585 and are as much as $4000! It hit stores April 28th and if you want a statement piece for the summer, please wake up in time to get in line, its only available in stores.

Are you coping?
