STL CRAVINGS: WHEN THE FLIGHT LANDS AT LAMBERT

When it comes to St. Louis foods what are some things that first come to mind?  Maybe Imo’s Pizza, Chinese food (St. Paul sandwich if you want to be exact), White Castles, Gooey Butter Cake, and Vess soda.  This list could go on and on.  I have spent the majority of my life in St. Louis so the food holds a special place in my heart, and my craving gets real as soon the plane touches down at Lambert.  I decided to share with you all some of my must have foods outside the typically norms for most St. Louisans when I visit home.

GOODY GOODY

So I think it is time for a moment of honesty with you all because we are fam!  I schedule early flights not so I can spend more time with family, but so I can catch Goody Goody before they close at 2pm.  This restaurant has been around since 1948 and it’s the first stop I make once getting to St. Louis.  Each time I go I always see a familiar face, and the consistency of the food has NEVER changed.

Brunchin’ In Queens: ORO

I have been living in New York City since 2014, and this past weekend I brunched in Queens for the first time.  Maybe it is because I have been living in Manhattan and this island has me spoiled rotten with endless brunch options.  Regardless, when given the chance to check out Queens with some good friends that are also foodies I jumped at the opportunity.

This past Sunday I checked out Oro, which is Spanish for GOLD.  Sounding classy already, huh? Before going to Oro I stalked their IG page, drooled over their food, and watched their promo video several times.  It was to the point my friend had to asked me if I was watching the video again and passing judgement at the same time.  Maybe it was the beautiful people having a good time, or my fav song playing in the background, or the positive energy this spot gave off.  From the video  I JUST knew I needed to experience it!

New Restaurant:  CLAY

There’s a new kid on the block in Harlem!  Clay recently opened about 3 months ago, and the neighborhood seems to be welcoming them with arms wide opened.  This new restaurant features a Farm to Table concept which means only the freshest of ingredients from local suppliers is served at this restaurant.  This is great for YOU because having a menu that changes based upon the season provides you with options.

Their wine list is rather extensive, and if you are a red wine drinker then you are in for a good time. Clay has over 20 different types of red wines, and don’t worry they are still showing plenty of love to you white wine drinkers.  Their bartenders are the real deal and WILL recommend the perfect drink based upon whatever your taste-buds are craving.  I recently dropped in for a drink and did not get a chance to indulge in their food, but I did get a chance take a peek at the menu.  Their menu includes dishes such as Waygu tartare, duck breast, black bass, and gnocchi.    I plan on making my way back to Clay soon to sit down and have dinner as well, and I promise to report back!

This is a great atmosphere for a date, family dinner, a quiet brunch,  or just grabbing drinks.  They also have happy hour during the weekday from 4-7pm which includes a vodka based drink called Queen Bee.  A possible ode to Beyoncé? In my head I just want to say “Yeah!”.

I will be making reservations soon for dinner, and will share my full dining experience with you all SOON!

A Night At The Honeywell

I mentioned The Honeywell in my last post entitled “The Love Above 125th Street” that highlighted some Harlem businesses.  I recently went back so I could order off their secret menu, and sip libations from a lava lamp.  It completely makes sense to enjoy a drink out of a lava lamp at a retro themed bar.  Check out some pictures from my groovy evening at The Honeywell, and be sure to check out their Instagram page as well.

Harlem Bars: Showing Above 125th Some Love

Harlem is unlike any other neighborhood in New York City, and it has been my home for almost 4 years.  Since living in this neighborhood I find it very important to support the local businesses in my hood from my cleaners, to my shoe repair, local clothing stores, restaurants, and bars.  I feel as if when it comes to the restaurant/bar scene in Harlem things above 125th street are sometimes an afterthought for most people.  I wanted to share with you some of my favorite places to grab a good drink above 125th.

The Honeywell – This bar is located on the lower level of a building in which you are not able to see directly into from walking past.  This being said, it creates this level of suspense before you walk into this bar that transports you back to the 70’s with their dimmed yellow lights and retro wallpaper.  This bar does not  JUST have tentative bartenders that serve up great drinks, but puts on a damn great show while making them.  They accept reservations via their website, and is great for large groups and offer great bar bites.  Be prepared to fall in love and cheat on current fav bartenders.

Menu Preview at Zio

If you cannot tell from my IG feed and previous post I am a FAN of Zio Ristorante.  They lured me with their happy hour and stole my heart with their food.  They recently invited me to come and preview their May lunch prix fix menu, and what food blogger can say no to that?  Each month their 3 course lunch menu changes, and for a whopping $20 you can eat like a king or queen.  The quality, presentation, and portions will leave you wanting to snap a pics for the Gram and scheduling all future lunch dates at this restaurant.  Lets dive into this menu!

The starters for the May menu included Zuppa, Insalata, and Calamari.  The Zuppa is a puree of green peas that is served warmed and has a hint of mint.  The Zuppa has a great balance of the peas and the mint, the mint actually provided a delicate after taste.  The Insalata includes mixed greens, strawberries, pumpkin seeds, fresh mozzarella, and balsamic vinaigrette.  This salad screams spring and summertime because it is light and refreshing.  The calamari had to be my favorite from the appetizer section of the menu.  The grilled calamari included mango, cherry tomatoes, and fennel.  This perfectly grilled calamari just melts in your mouth.

New Restaurant: BONMi

I recently got invited out to a new location for BONMi in the Flatiron District of Manhattan.  BONMi is a Vietnamese inspired fast casual restaurant featuring non-traditional Bánh Mì Sandwiches, Greens, Rice, and Noodle Bowls.  They pride themselves in using premium and all natural ingredients.  Their signature dishes include the Red Eye Bánh Mì Sandwich, High Five Rice & Quinoa Bowl, BBQ Belly Bánh Mì Sandwich, and the Kickshaw Salad.  They also have a Build Your Own menu with your base can be a sandwich or a bowl.  From there you also pick your filling, sauce, and finally toppings. Trader Joe’s Favs

When I first moved to NYC I saw people hauling multiple Trader Joe’s bags on the the subway.  I kept telling myself Trader Joe’s cannot be that great, and refused to go shopping there because I felt if I conformed I would be coming part of the TJ cult.  After one visit I was convinced that I found love in place called Trader Joe’s.  Grocery shopping in NYC is similar to trying to complete some strenuous obstacle course that requires strategic planning. Imagine trying to determine how many items you buy, juggle in two arms, and fit onto a possibly packed subway. (more…)

La Salle Dumpling Room In Harlem

Happy Monday and I hope you all are starting off this week on the right foot.

Let’s have have a moment of honesty!  Finding a great Chinese restaurant above 110th is a difficult task in itself!  And to clarify I am NOT referring to your local Chinese TAKEOUT SPOT.  I am referring to a nice sit down establishment that is not Asian Fusion and stays in their lane.  There are far too many “Japanese restaurants” with big menus also selling Chinese and Thai food.
